Who's Who in Risk Assessment
July 2005
ENIA (European Nickel Industry Association) represents, at a European level, the
interests of the European nickel supply industry and a portion of the European nickel-using industry.
ENIA members include most EU producers and importers of nickel, most major exporters of nickel to the EU
and includes or works closely with the important EU nickel-using industries, especially the EU steel
industry. Particularly important is ENIA's close collaboration with EU organisations representing the
stainless steel industry: Eurofer and Euro Inox. For further information, see http://www.eurofer.org/ and http://www.euro-inox.org/.
ENIA is associated with Eurometaux (see below) and through it collaborates with other EU non-ferrous metal organisations on matters of common interest, including generic matters related to risk assessment of metals and alloys.
ENiESG (Europe Nickel Existing Substances Group) is hosted by ENIA and seeks to bring together those nickel producers and importers who are legally governed by the existing substances regulation for risk assessment, together with several of the main downstream users of the priority listed nickel risk assessment substances (see the list of participating companies below). This group seeks to organise, and where necessary fund, an effective industry input for the EU Risk Assessment process. This is organised through a risk assessment project team, led by Ms Paola di Discordia who is based with ENIA.
The work of ENiESG is strongly supported by The Nickel Institute, which is funded by the majority of the world's nickel-producing companies.
Eurometaux represents the interests of the EU non-ferrous metals industry at a European level. For more information about Eurometaux, see Eurometaux website >> .
NiPERA (Nickel Producers' Environmental Research Association) is part of the Nickel Institute and is charged with developing high quality science on health and environmental issues relating to the production and use of nickel, with the aim of encouraging the use of sound science by regulators. To this end, NiPERA have been responsible for generating an extensive body of peer-reviewed scientific literature relating to nickel. NiPERA specialists have provided this scientific literature relating to nickel. NiPERA scientists have provided this information to the EU Risk Assessors, together with expert advice on its use. For further information, see NiPERA website >>.
The Nickel Institute encourages the effective and appropriate use of nickel by society. It provides focused technical and economic information to commercial decision makers such as engineers, researchers, architects, designers to stimulate the development and application of nickel-related products and processes. The Nickel Institute is also developing information about the nickel life cycle for wider audiences in the context of sustainable development, including information relating to recycling and life cycle assessment. The Institute operates an active product stewardship policy on behalf of its members. The Nickel Institute has been supporting the risk assessment project team by providing statistics and advice on the wide variety of uses of nickel in the EU.
